Latin Liturgies to be Celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua

We are excited to announce that during Holy Week, Saint Anthony of Padua will be holding liturgies in both English and Latin. The Latin liturgies during the Paschal Triduum will be held:

  • Holy Thursday
    • 5 PM – Extraordinary Form of the Mass (Latin)
    • Rev. Robert Herbst, OFM Conv.
  • Good Friday
    • 6 PM
    • Rev. Robert Herbst, OFM Conv.

About the Latin Mass

There are two major forms of the Latin Rite. We have the Ordinary Form (Novus Ordo) which is what most people experience in almost all the parishes here in Las Vegas, and then there is the Extraordinary Form. There are similarities and differences between both forms, the most striking being that the Novus Ordo is said in the vernacular (the language of the people; i.e. English, Spanish, Tagalog, etc.) while the Extraordinary Form is said in Latin (with the homily and the readings in the vernacular). The Extraordinary Form goes by different names. Some call it the Traditional Latin Mass (or the TLM for short), the Tridentine Mass, or the Pre-Vatican II Mass.

The Extraordinary Form of the Mass is how the liturgy was celebrated and experienced by many saints through the ages, including St. Padre Pio, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Bernadette, the children of Fatima, St. Maximilliam Kolbe and thousands of others.

About the Latin Mass Society of Las Vegas

The Latin Mass Society of Las Vegas helps facilitate the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Latin Mass is typically celebrated every Sunday at 11 AM at Saint Bridget Roman Catholic Church (220 N 14th St, Las Vegas, NV 89101).

About Fr. Herbst

Fr. Robert was born in Chicago, IL, and completed his college at St. Mary’s University in MD prior to entering the Franciscans. After completing the novitiate, he was sent to the Dominican School of Theology in Berkeley where he completed his M.Div., and then Gallaudet University where he received an MA in Education, focusing on Ministry with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Ordained to the presbyterate in Hermosa Beach, he served as pastor of St. Thomas Church in Riverside for 9 years before being assigned to the Collegium Paenitentaria Apostolica at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City – a ministry of the Franciscans. While ministering at St. Peter’s, he completed his Doctorate in Canon Law, the first earned doctorate in St. Joseph Cupertino province since its inception. Returning to the US, he is currently serving as the Chancellor, Judicial Vicar, and Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Oakland – while continuing to minister to the Deaf community in the Diocese and assisting various parishes, especially in the Extraordinary (Latin) Form of the sacraments.
